Applied Hydrology and Drainage

REGM 6106

Hydrology is an earth science concerned with assessments of the natural distribution of water in time and space and with evaluating the impact of man-mad changes on the distribution and quality of this water. This course deals with surface and subsurface waters and learning to understand human influences on the hydrological process.   Students will be introduced to a number of tools (i.e. hydrological and hydraulic modelling software), which allow practitioners to assess the integration of hydrological processes pre and post human intervention.

Hydrology draws on a number of physical and life sciences such as meteorology, soil physics and geology, and a number of mathematical sciences such as fluid mechanics, probability and statistics, and systems analysis. This course includes a basic treatment of these subjects in the context of hydrological and water resource applications related to Railway Projects. Attention is paid to techniques for the collection of hydro-meteorological data and the formulation of mathematical models of hydrological systems based on principles of physics, systems analysis and probability. The applications of these models in solving such problems as flood estimation, water resources evaluation (both surface and subsurface) is described. Aspects of hydraulic engineering for river cross structures are also covered.
